Anti-nutritive and toxic factors in trees and shrubs used as browse

Eight multipurpose trees/shrubs, Afzelia bella, Albizia zygia, Alchornea cordifolia, Baphia nitida, Dialum guineense, Glicirida sepium, Newbouldia laevis and Morinda lucida, commonly used as browse for small ruminants, were screened for polyphenols,alkaloids, and cyanogenic, saponin, cardiac and anthraquinone glycosides. No cyanogenic or anthraquinone glycosides or alkaloids were detected. Polyphenols were detected in all the species. Cardiac glycosides were present in all except A. cordifolia andM. lucida, and all except A. bella contained saponin glycosides.
