The effect of overnight supplementation with leucaena leaves on productivity and grazing activity of goats given access to a D. setivalva pasture for 8 h during the day was studied. The study was conducted from June to September 1994. Ten non-pregnant, non-lactating goats (local Kambing Kacang, 4-6 months old, 9.3 kg) were divided into 2 groups. Grazing activity was measured 4 times a week by 2 observers, before and after noon on alternate days. Pasture samples were taken monthly, ten 0.5 X 1 m quadrates. Maximum grazing activity occurred between 09.00 and 11.00 h for control and supplemented groups. The latter showed lower grazing activity only during the first hour of being allowed out of the pens. A general decline in activity was observed after 3-4 h of grazing. Goats voluntarily returned to their shed for about 1 h to rest and ruminate, after which they resumed grazing. Daily liveweight gain of the supplemented group (72.4 g/head) was significantly greater than that of the control (31.4 g/head). Analysis of grab samples of pasture indicated that goats selected a diet that was of higher quality than the overall sward. Leucaena leaves were not only a good source of protein, but also corrected the deficient Ca:P ratio of the grass diet.
