Cattle hypocuprosis is one of the principal nutritional disorders that affects pasture grazing cattle in Argentina. It occurs in a definite geographical location and acquires its highest importance at the Rio Salado Depression basin. In calves with copper (Cu) deficiency, the functions of copper enzymes become altered a phenomena linked to the presentation of clinical and subclinical signs of the disease. The objective of this study is to evaluate a therapeutical model of strategic supplementation with Cu in breeding calves consequent with a single supplementation from 4 to 5 months of age. Three groups of 20 animals each were used in this study, the first served as the positive control; the second with no treatment served as negative control and the third group consists of animals which received a single dose of copper in December. A total of 4 samples were made and in each cupraemia values were assayed, as well as daily weight gain and the evolution of total weights. The results obtained demonstrated that a single Cu dose up to 2 months helped maintained the levels of normocupraemia and prevented hypocuprosis. An increase in the liveweight gain of calves was observed for the copper supplemented group however such difference was not significant as compared with the control group.
