Turf experts said it couldn't be done. Area turf producers weren't interested in trying it. Yet bermudagrass is flourishing on sports fields of the Blue Valley School District in the Johnson County suburbs of Kansas City, Kan. Pushing the zone in turf selection is just part of the District's innovative athletic field program. With 28 schools and 600 acres of turf to maintain within the 91 square miles covered by the School District, innovation is a necessity. Rapid growth, increased field use and rising expectations led the District to establish a dedicated grounds department in tile mid-1990s. Insuring safety and quality on the athletic fields was a prime concern in taking the already good program to the next level.
