摘要

With the holiday season approaching, health officials in mid-Wales are concerned at the potential for a fresh upsurge in hydatid disease in humans caused by a tapeworm in dogs. Farmers and vets are convinced that a new generation of parents in mid-Wales are largely unaware of the health threat which they and their children face, and that increased levels of tourists and visitors to the area could spread the pisk to other parts of the UK. "Many, probably most, will never have heard about this," says Tom Walters, hydatid disease coordinator in Powys. "Others may have heard unpleasant accounts of years of suffering and surgery, but somehow imagine it's all in the past and we don't have to worry any more - rather like mumps or TB.
