Veterinary practices are obliged to provide twenty four hour cover for their clients. However, the way in which they achieve that objective is a matter for individual practice owners. Some practices deal with night and weekend emergency calls themselves, others ensure their clients receive emergency care through an unrelated practice, where teams of veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses are employed specifically to deal with emergency work. I recently visited one such Yorkshire-based practice, Abbey House Veterinary Hospital, to learn about the service they operate under the name of Leeds Emergency Vets.
