Messrs. Saxton and Hoare protest rather too much regarding the recent BVA position paper on homoeopathy. The BVA is the representative body for our profession, and while membership is voluntary, anyone who is not a member (or indeed who is a member but takes no interest in BVA affairs) only has himself to blame if his views are not then taken into account. With regard to the MHRA homoeopathic licensing consultation, it is clear that the BVA followed its usual procedure for consulting with its divisions. It is under no obligation to consult any more widely than that. Nevertheless, the MHRA consultation as a whole was a public exercise, with individuals as well as representative bodies being free to contribute. If the BAHVS and its members missed thisopportunity that is their own fault, and it is petty to lay the blame on the BVA. The crux of this dispute is the assertion by Messrs. Saxton and Hoare that "In fact there is a substantial body of evidence... to counter the idea that homoeopathy is a dhproven therapy." They have made this claim before. However, no citations have been produced to support it. Where are these controlled trials of veterinary homoeopathy that we are invited to believe the BVA's consultation process overlooked?
