摘要

A new term has crept into the large animal vet's vocabulary over the last year or so: single-dose, full-course therapy. Its emergence is largely due to the success of a new cattle and swine treatment that was launched across Europe last year. But does this new concept deserve a description all of its own, or is it more hype than help? The treatment in question is Draxxin: an antibacterial treat ment based on tulathromycin, the first of a new class of drugs called triamilides. The thing that sets it apart from other treatments is not its mode of action, or route of administration, but its duration of action. Just one injection produces lung tissue concentrations of active drug which remain above the MIC values of common respiratory pathogens for at least 9 days in catde and 5 days in swine - far longer than any comparable treatment. As a result, it can not only achieve an effective bacteriological and clinical cure, but also extend antibacterial cover into the post-cure recovery period. It is during this critical time, when the animal's natural defence mechanisms are still recovering, that the risk of relapse or re-infection is highest.
