ONCE A YEAR for the past three years since I moved to the USA, the Editor reminds me that the GTI International special edition is coming up, and once a year I groan inwardly. It really was a whole lot easier when I lived in Germany. Ahhhh, those were the days - living in a country which manages to absorb around 45.000 GTIs every year; that is not only the first to get each new generation, but also any subsequent tweaks or updates. It never used to be difficult to find material for the GTI International edition. But, alas, those days are gone. In the USA, the GTI is a niche car, produced by a niche manufacturer and sold in volumes too small to merit even the word 'niche In a land of 300,000 million inhabitants, only around 15,000 of them feel compelled to invest in a GTI in any given year That makes them pretty difficult to find. They also have a habit of not even getting the latest model generation until two years after everybody else!
