THIS MONTH'S issue is focussed on the Golf GTI, the model which has been Volkswagen's iconic car of the past 30 or so years, just as the Ur quattro has been Audi's icon. The Mk 1 GTI virtually crept into Britain and there was so little faith in its sales potential that only left-hand-drive versions were imported to special order. It took a little while for the importer to realise that the Golf GTI was a smouldering success story, and for Wolfsburg to begin production of cars with right-hand steering.
