Last month, Paul Harris looked at the construction of the new 1.6-litre TDI engine, and now he examines its fuel injection system. THE COMMON-RAIL fuel system for this engine was developed by engineers from both Volkswagen and Continental. There is a general rule that, the higher the injection pressure, the smaller the droplets of fuel which are injected and the better the mixture formation. A single high-pressure pump creates the injection pressure, which has a maximum value of 1,600 bar, and this is maintained irrespective of engine speed and injection quantity.
