Natural humic substances contain a small percentage of halogens with chlorine as the quantitatively most important. Natural chlorinated hydrocarbons can be found in ancient groundwater and very old lacustrine sediments (contamination can be excluded). Recently developed fingerprint techniques show that chlorine, bromine and iodine bind differently to various molecular weight fractions. They are also subject to microbial degradation. Recent reports indicate that bacteria, microalgae, macroalgae andlignin-degrading fungi contribute significantly to natural halogen chemistry. A natural abiotic pathway seems to exist in addition to the biotic pathway. Halomethanes (such as chloroform), halogenated aromatic and aliphatic compounds are the quantitatively dominating compound families. For example, the natural emission of chloromethane exceeds the man-made emission by more than two orders of magnitude. Further climate-relevant alkylhalogen compounds can also be formed naturally. In soils and in freshwater, formation and in many instances degradation is strongly correlated to humic content.
