'A spoonful of sugar' recommended that hospitals modernise their medicines management systems,,1 Core components of a modern system are 'one stop' dispensing, patient self-medication and the use of patients' own drugs (PODs). A number of advantages of POD use were described,,1 At University Hospital Lewisham, PODs are used throughout the hospital, integral to the medicines management system, which includes 'one stop' dispensing, patient packs and pharmacists taking drug histories. The system covers all acute services, emergency and elective, including paediatrics. The system was introduced in 2001 and research showed significant decreases in discharge prescription turn round, and initially reduced dispensary workload.2 Further work, during the first full year of operation on the pharma-coeconomic impact confirmed that significant savings that could be made.3 This study was set up to identify whether initially identified savings are maintained.
