The Audit Commission report, 'A spoonful of sugar' recommended the use of automated pharmacy systems (APS) to increase the dispensing capacity and reduce dispensing errors,,1 Several APS are now available and hospital pharmacies are increasingly investing in such technology.2 Previous work has shown a reduction in turnaround times for prescriptions 3 However no reports on the effects of automation on the outpatient dispensing service were found in the literature, This study aimed to determine the effect of automation on turnaround time for outpatient prescriptions and patient satisfaction with the outpatient dispensing service at Llandough hospital.
