摘要

Medication adherence levels have been found to be greatly reduced in asymptomatic illnesses such as hypertension.1 One study found that 61 % of hypertensive patients do not take medication as prescribed,2 Polypharmacy also increases the risk of side-effects and decreases adherence.3 Psychosocial variables such as depression, social support and medication-taking self-efficacy have been examined by researchers in relation to adherence. The overall aim of the present study was to examine the influence of psychosocial variables on adherence to medication in difficult-to-control hypertensive patients (i.e. those who had been referred by their general practitioner (GP) for more intensive management) in an outpatient hospital clinic setting.
