摘要

For those within the pharmacy family it is not uncommon to hear our professional bodies or organisations advocate the public health role of pharmacy. Whether those outside pharmacy are convinced by the message or the meagre evidence base is unclear. What is evident is that when looking at the big picture of public health, pharmacy rarely gets a specific mention. This should not be a surprise, nor a deterrent to those who work on or study the public health contribution of pharmacy. Given the total resources of the UK health service have been estimated to account for no more than 30% of the health of any given individual, this limits somewhat the overall contribution of pharmacy to the determinants of the health agenda. The remaining 70% of what determines the health of the individual lies outside the domain of health, thereby providing an additional challenge for pharmacy, and resides in the province of the individual's demographic, social, economic and environmental conditions.
