Characteristics of distortion of bond length in glassy carbon nanocrystalline by Raman spectroscopy

Bond length (or lattice) distortion, crystallite size and crystal boundary structure are all important aspects in the research of nanocrystalline structure. A number of interesting works have been published concerning the effect of lattice distortionon the properties of nanocrystalline, but the studies of the characteristics of bond length or lattice distortion of nanocrystalline have not been specially reported. In this note, a new method analyzing bond length distortion in nanocrystalline by Ramanspectroscopy is given on the basis of Fitzer's formula about bond length of carbon bond. By this method, the most probable bond length (b_g), the average bond length (b_g), the bond length distortion (Δb_g) and the expansion rate of bond length (α) ofsp~2 bond in glassy carbon nanocrystalline can be measured. It is shown from the above research that probably distortion exists mostly in transitional layers of distorted bond length which is formed near crystallite boundary. Furthermore, the phenomenon of bond length expansion in the transitional layers is discussed from the electronic structure.
