A preliminary evaluation is made of the annual renewable energy captured by secondary forests in Costa Rica, in comparison with the national energy consumption. The amount of purchased energy that could be replaced by this biomass energy is established and the results suggest that given the high biomass potential of the forests, they could be used to replace fossil fuel imports.
