Okay, for all of you "by the book" mushroom pickers, it's easy enough to follow the suggestions listed in many field guides on which equipment is necessary for you to tote along on your mushroom foray, but are you sure you're REALLY equipped? It is true that the list ought to include a sharp knife, gathering basket, wax paper, bug spray, pencil, paper and a camera. These are essential for a basic stroll in familiar territory with little to no hazards and easily accessible "loot". If you're anything like me, much more is required to ensure your success (and safety). Of course, where you intend to hold your "search and reap" mission will most definitely dictate the types of tools needed. Yet you can never be too prepared, according to me. There will inevitably be an occurrence when the unexpected presents itself. Whether it be losing one's "sense" of direction, some encounter with competition of the fur (or flannel) bearing type, large clusters of Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) 20 feet up a tree or the discovery of one or more 30 pound Hen of the Woods (Grifolafrondosd). You just never know. This is where "There's no such thing as being too prepared" comes in.
