The American grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) has been progressively replacing thenative red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in Britain ever since its introduction in 1876. Relictpopulations of the red squirrel are still extant in Wales, East Anglia and on some islands(Isle of Wight and islands in Poole Harbour). However, the largest concentrations of redsquirrels in England are now confined to the north of England (Durham, Northumberland,Cumbria and west Lancashire), the northern most being contiguous with the Scottishpopulations in Berwick, Roxburgh and Dumfries.
