The modern focus is on lowering production costs - yet returns are being cut by over 100 pound a sow on some units because of the prolonged weaning to service interval. John Richardson, pig products manager with Intervet, puts a daily price on the problem and explains how it can be reduced. Economic survival for UK pig producers in the European pig industry will increasingly depend on reducing total production costs of pigmeat. This will involve cost containment and increased output - either in terms of pigs sold per sow per year, or the weight of pigmeat sold per sow.
