Clean buildings, good slurry management and effective ventilation systems are the three main keys to reducing odour problems on pig units. They also help to reinforce the impression of a well run business. Many odour problems can be minimised by simply keeping pens clean. A number of factors contribute to dirty pens - such as including over or understocking, inappropriate building and pen design, poor floor surfaces and badly sited feeding and watering facilities. As a guide, space allowances for pig lying areas should meet the requirements set out in the MAFF Code of Recommendations for the Welfare of Pigs, and extra space should be provided for exercise and dunging.
