A unit that can cope with 35 pigs a sow a year - and daily growth of 2kg. This dream of the future incorporates a great deal of today's best thinking in buildings, equipment, nutrition and management. Such thinking lifted this entry to the top in thePig Farming-JSR Healthbred competition to design a 1,000 sow unit. The main objectives of the competition - open to pig producers and students - were to ensure best welfare, and to build-in flexibility which would enable the unit, to cope with everythingthe legislators and public demand was likely to throw at it in the next 20 years. The judges considered this entry from producer Tim Briscoe, of Keepers Cottage, Buxton, near Norwich in Norfolk, best met the criteria (see May edition Pig Farming, pages2-3).
