Telomere is the protein-DNA complex at ends of the linear chromosomes of eukaryotes, and it is important for the stability and the complete replication of the chromosome end, Telomeric DNA consists of tandem repeats of a simple repeat sequence with aconsensus motif containing G-rich strand reading 5' -- 3' toward the end of the chromosome. For example, most higher plants share the sequence TTTAGGG, which is characterized first in A. Thaliana. In a number of species, the essential telomeric repeats,which common to all chromosomes, are followed by more complex repeated sequences, which are present on some, but not all, chromosomes and commonly referred to as the telomere-associated sequences (TAS) or subtelomeric sequences. These sequences contain different combinations of repeated sequence elements at the telomere, they can extend for tens or hundreds of kb, and can be a source of chromosome polymorphism. They are highly polymorphic within and between species or subspecies.
