Interface bond mechanisms of ceramic-cemented carbide compact insert

摘要

SINCE the 1970s coated cemented carbide tools have been developed so as to further improve their wear and heat resistance. For the coated tools, cemented carbide with high strength and fracture toughness are selected as matrix materials, carbide, boride and nitride with high hardness are used as coating materials. Because the coating thickness of the coated tools is generally not more than 20 jum, the advantages of the coating will disappear gradually owing to the tool wear and regrinding. In this note, ceramic-cemented carbide compact inserts have been developed using hot pressing sintering techniques, the upper part of the compact insert is of Al_2O_3 + TiB_2 ceramic material, while the base part of the compact insert is of WC + Co cemented carbide. The thickness of the upper part of the compact insert is greater than that of the coating of the coated tools. Therefore the compact insert makes full use of the advantages of ceramic materials and cemented carbides so as to improve its mechanical properties and cutting performance.
