Concept evaluation is a critical step in the stage of conceptual design and has a significant impact on the success or failure of mechanical product. An improved FAHP method using group decision-making theory is proposed to tackle it Firstly, a simplified 3-scale method is adopted to generate the judgment matrices meeting the consistency checking. Then using fuzzy delphi method and hierarchical aggregation method, the total evaluation value expressed with fuzzy number for each candidate can be obtained through the disposal of multi-persons' opinions. Finally these concepts are ranked with fuzzy utility values ranking theory and the best candidate can be selected. Under this proposed method, it is easier for the experts to give relatively precise judgments and the evaluation process is simplified. At the same time, the deviation of single person's evaluation can be effectively corrected because of the aggregation of multi-persons' experience. This approach is applied to an engineering case for the evaluation of mechanical kinematic concepts, which demonstrates the rationality and validity of this method.
