摘要

India has made a long journey in the field of irrigation by raising the irrigation coverage from 22.6 million ha in 1951 to 100 million ha in 2005. Consequently the food-grain production was raised from 50 million tones to 210 millions tons in above period. The population with 100 crores in 2005 will reach a figure of 180 crores by 2050 with an estimated demand of food-grain of 450 million tons. This is a tall order scenario. Consequent to this, the water demand for irrigation will rise in an accelerated manner, to cope up with the enhanced food production.
