France's Alcatel reported that it plans to reduce its U.S. workforce by approximately 1,100 jobs, including 800 full-time positions, in reponse to what it term the U.S. economic slowdown and resulting reduced customer spending.An announcement from Alcatel said that the company "is increasing its cost management initiatives to remain competitive in the States."Those initiatives, it said, include "gaining efficiencies in its overall U.S. operating budget."Those measures include the work force reductions, which it said represent less than 5 percent of Alcatel's U.S. workforce.
