Research on tilapia was actively pursued by a number of investigators once again in 2007. Several of the references I found mentioned tilapia but the focus of the research was on other things, such as the performance of the culture system, not the fish within it. There were also a number of papers on the response of tilapia to pollutants and in the wild. Those papers and studies reporting on aspects of genetics and physiological responses that don't, at least to me, have a great deal of interest for the typical aquaculturist were eliminated from consideration this year in an effort to reduce the length of the report. Having said that, I asked readers last year to alert me about publications I missed. I received two reprints, one of which I would have used last year (Hakim et al. 2006) as it relates enzymatic activity with food utilization and growth in tilapia. The other paper (Shirak et al. 2006) is of the type that I have not included in this 2007 tilapia update. A significant percentage of the references found for 2007 are to abstracts of presentations made at the Aquaculture 2007 meeting in San Antonio, Texas USA from February 26 through March 2.
