It's an issue that virtually every large supplier has confronted after building a new plant, launching a new product or making an acquisition.The problem is overcapacity. And it's unavoidable as long as automakers expect their suppliers to follow them into new markets that don't bear fruit as quickly as expected, which has happened recently in South America and Asia/Pacific. Like in warrantywork, suppliers share the risks and rewards.To say overcapacity is a mistake on the part of suppliers is a misnomer because the fickle realities of the auto industry make it tremendously difficult to predict precisely how much plant space is really necessary. Knowing that formula is nothing shortof holding the winning numbers before the Super Lotto drawing.
