Lignocellulosic biomass from coconut palms, including bunch waste (spathe + spadices), leaf stalk (petioles), leaflets and coir pith, was evaluated as substrate for the cultivation of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus sajor-caju). A low cost mushroom shedbuilt exclusively of coconut materials such as coconut wood and plaited coconut leaves inside a coconut plantation was used for the spawn run and cropping. Leaf stalk and bunch waste produced significantly more edible mushroom biomass than leaflets andcoir pith. Biological efficiencies of leaf stalk, bunch waste, coir pith and leaflets were 58.9, 56.9, 39.7 and 38.2%, respectively. Sporophore yield was significantly positively correlated with the cellulose content and cellulose:lignin ratio of the substrates.
