Plastic flow of sphene in high pressure mylonite

Sphene is a common accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks, It is usually not deformed because it is more competent than the major rock-forming minerals, such as quartz, feldspars and mica. Little is known about the plastic property of sphene. In 1970, Borg reported two sets of mechanical twins in sphene in deformed granite from Harkat and Piledriver nuclear explosions. Sphenes in undeformed granite do not have twinning. Twins are found first at impact pressure of 0.5—0.8 Gpa and differential pressure of 0.1 Gpa, Toward the explosion center, twin frequency increases. Borg determined by using universal stage that the twin planes were K_1={221}, K_2={131}, N_1=<110>, N_2= irrational plane. Borg was able to reproduce mechanical twins in sphene in laboratory at pressure of 0.8 Gpa and a temperature of 25— 500°C, and strain rate of 10~(-6) centre dot s~(-1). No other report has been found in the literature. This note reports the pkstic flow of sphene in naturally deformed mylonite and discusses its deformation condition and geological significance.
