摘要

Sustainability of lignite mining in the Rhenish lignite mining area is ensured by a preceding study of the overall project,with the involvement of all those affected.The supporting holistic consideration of the various Sustainability elements is essential for a later balancing of the several ecological,economic and social concerns.In what follows,a brief overview of the Rhenish lignite mining area is given as introduction to the focus of this report,which is on Sustainability,starting with the approval procedure under regional planning law incl.opencast mine planning,and extending to concrete on-the-spot implementation,taking the Garzweiler II follow-up mine as example.To illustrate the issues involved,an account is given of some selected Sustainability elements.
