Compared with the civil engineering sector, lignite mining in the Rhenish mining area with depths of more than 350 m has a "special status" in that it often goes beyond the usual application fields of calculation methods. In the opencast mines of the Rhenish mining area lignite is extracted using continuous opencast mining systems (bucket wheel excavators - belt conveyors - spreaders) with maximum system dimensions of 240,000 m~3+t per day being used. In 2008, 11 km of rim slopes (these will be overturned again following extraction), 375 km of operational slopes and 245 km of dumping slopes were created by main mine equipment in the three opencast mines.
