The Islamic Republic of Pakistan covers an area of 796,095 km~2.In 2003,Pakistan had some 135 million inhabitants [1]. The per capita gross national product (GNP) in 2003 was USus 460. Pakistan has large lignite resources of approx.186 billion tonnes.The largest area is located in the south-eastern province of Sindh where some 99 % of the total lignite has been explored.The government of Pakistan undertakes enormous efforts to substantially increase lignite production and thus accelerate industrialization and raise the living standard in the country.One of the industrialization projects is the planned use of lignite mined in the Thar region for power generation and refining purposes in the Sindh province.
