For many immersive entertainment and three dimensional videoconference systems, providing stereo views is an important feature to let users feel as if they are participating, especially if the systems can provide continuous look-around. This often needs many cameras to capture images simultaneously. Obviously, this is not cost-effective from the instrumental, data storage and transmission considerations. It is motivation of this paper to investigate a method to synthesize intermediate views just from a pair of stereo image in real time. Image quality of the synthesized intermediate view depends mainly on precise and dense disparity field and on detection of occlusion in multi-view applications. In this paper, an intermediate view creation and interpolation algorithm is proposed by taking advantages of transmitted and decoded disparity fields to avoid mass disparity calculation. Region segmentation and disparity calibration technologies are combined to correct those mismatched disparities. Furthermore, in the intermediate view creation, contents of the regions with occlusion and blur are judged by applying region segmentation technology, and be filled depending on disparity characteristics. Experimental results with various stereoscopic pairs demonstrate that the created intermediate view images have favorite view effect.
