In Tanzania, despite high rates of antenatal care and relatively good access to health facilities, maternal and neonatal mortality remain high-at 310/100,000 live births,1 and 23/1000 live births, respectively, and almost half of all deliveries are performed at home, without a skilled attendant,2 With mobile phone penetration growing so rapidly in Africa, mobile technology is being increasingly utilized and recognized as a tool to improve access to and utilization of health services.
