An expanded typology for the vascular bundles of bamboo culms

The vascular bundles are the most varied structures of a bamboo culm. Whereas size and distribution change within an internode and along the culm length, their composition and shape is genetically determined. Earlier analyses (Grosser and Liese, 1971, 1973) on about 50 species resulted in four basic bundle types, to be assigned to specific genera. Since then, additional species were investigated and more results reported. The consequent expansion of the "classical" vascular bundle typology has led to a subdivision of the types I and II, stability for the types III and IV, and an addition of a type V with subdivided fiber strands at the inner side of the central vascular strand, and a type VI with strikingly large phloem and metaxylem areas; fiber strands if occurring, often subdivided.
