The long-awaited flowering of this bamboo, whose disseminated clones derive from the Berezovski collection (early 1880), seems to be slowly starting to happen. My over-20-year-old grove of 'Chenneviere', which in the previous year still showed numerous growth of new culms, remained without development of any new culms worth mentioning. Because the Berezovski nitidas had to flower sooner or later, I thought the delay in new growth might be a predictive symptom of flowering. Additionally, I heard thatthis clone had shown flowers in two locations in Germany. Towards fall, the 'Chenneviere' developed early-stage inflorescences on every tuft of leaves. It was concluded from this that it would fully flower in early 2002, assuming an exceptional winter did not destroy the formed flower buds.
