There was a time when the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute, was used only for ceremonial and religious purposes and was rarely considered a secular musical instrument, but the instrument gradually gained a following among the general public at home and abroad. This trend largely was due to non-Japanese shakuhachi makers and players like John Kaizan Neptune. It has been more than 30 years since Neptune set off in search of the instrument's beautiful sounds, which he says seem to evoke magical power to movepeople. As a shakuhachi performer, researcher and producer, the 52-year-old American has a passion for bamboo.
