A simple development to the Nottingham Asphalt Tester is described, which allows confining stress to be applied during repeated load tests to measure permanent deformation characteristics. The test was used to assess two groups of porous asphaltwearing course specimens, one made with conventional bitumen and one with a polymer modified bitumen. The results demonstrated the importance of applying confining stress for testing materials of this type. The influence of the binder type was lesssignificant except for unconfined specimens.
