At an HSA board of trustees meeting in 2002, someone suggested that the Holly Society begin recommending a "holly of the year." The idea seemed to be a good one: create a program that would bring superlative hollies to the attention of the public andat the same time, inform gardeners and nurserymen of the existence of the Society. The board agreed and named the program in honor of one of the Society's good friends, the late Gene Eisenbeiss, a holly expert who had done so much over the years to helpthe Society. At the same time, the board decided upon a 2003 Gene Eisenbeiss Holly of the Year and made preliminary plans to implement the program. Selections for 2004 through 2008 were chosen by vote of the board at their next meeting. In selecting hollies for at least this first group, they tried to pick plants that would be available at a wide range of nurseries, would be easy to grow, and would be hardy in a number of USDA hardiness zones.Ilex opaca 'Satyr Hill' was chosen to introduce the Gene Eisenbeiss Holly of the Year program. A fine American holly, it was selected and introduced by Stewart McLean and registered by him in 1970. 'Satyr Hill' stands out among the many cultivars of . opaca. The leaves are large and typical of American holly except that they are nearly flat. The fruit is large and bright red, and pollination is easily accomplished using an I. opaca male such as 'Jersey Knight' or 'Baltimore Buzz'. 'Satyr Hill' is hardywell into zone 5.
