The year 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the tragic death of Fanny Adams on the outskirts of Alton in Hampshire and the entry of her name into the English language. These days, it is usually used in the expression 'Sweet Fanny Adams' or 'Sweet F. A.' meaning very little or nothing at all. But it was not originally used in this sense and, over the years, the topic has caused considerable confusion. It therefore seems an appropriate time to review the story and the mythology surrounding it, and to attempt to set the record straight, particularly since at least some of the myths have originated or been promulgated in the pages of The Mariner's Mirror.
