摘要

The F/A-22 Raptor program could be scaled back in a move designed to trim the U.S. Government's budget. The Bush Administration's proposed 2006 budget looks at capping production at 179 planes, significantly short of the 276 planes called for in previous budget plans, and well below the 381 units the U.S. Air Force says it needs to replace older jets, like the F-15. The proposal, if it wins Congressional support, would cut more than 10 billion dollars (USD) from the 71 billion dollars program. The Pentagon is reportedly looking into stopping F/A-22 production in fiscal year 2008. Officials from the Air Force and Lockheed Martin (Bethesda, Md.), the Raptor's prime contractor, are lobbying to keep the jet in production after 2008, however. At the Air Force Assn.'s recent 2005 Air and Space Conference and Technology Exposition, in Washington, D.C., they cited cost-cutting measures and multiyear contracts as tools that could be used to reduce the overall cost of the program.
