I read with interest Judy Hazen's most recent editorial (HPC - November 2004, p. 7) about carbon fiber supply and the [. outlook for the next couple of years. I've tracked fiber supply and demand for years, as part of my consulting business. While most of the capacity numbers cited in her table (compiled from information presented at Intertech's Carbon Fiber Conference, Oct. 18-20, Hamburg, Germany) are correct based on my research, I believe that the projections of fiber demand are extremely low and we could be facing a serious fiber shortage. Precursor isn't the issue - it's the fiber production that's lagging behind.
