Following the high-profile delay of Airbus Industrie's A380 in 2006. EADS (Brussels, Belgium), the parent of Airbus (Toulouse, France), announced the launch of its Power8 aircraft production restructuring and cost-savings plan. Part of the plan calls for significant outsourcing, including divestiture to risk-sharing partners of six Airbus aircraft manufacturing facilities in Europe. The plants on the to-sell list include Meaulte and Saint Nazaire-Villc, France; Filton, U.K.; and Laupheim, Varel and Nordenham, Germany. Many of these sites involve composites manufacturing and are expected to play a major role in the production of the composites-intensive A350 XWB that Airbus is developing. Potential buyers/investors have surfaced in recent weeks, including some familiar names. GKN Pie (London, U.K.) has submitted a proposal to be an Airbus partner at the Filton facility. Airbus's U.K. operations in Filton are the center of excellence for the company's wing and composites manufacturing technology.
