I had the pleasure of co-chairing the Intertech 2003 Global Conference on Carbon Fibers in November where there was discussion - and concern - about the increasing demand for carbon fibers and the impact it may have on availability and pricing. I would like to offer my thoughts on how the industry can mitigate the swings in supply/demand and growing pains. First, a few words about the economics of making carbon fibers. These fibers have relatively low raw material costs. The fixed costs of capital investment amortization and labor are relatively high. Like many chemical plants and refineries, carbon fiber plants are operated continuously. Startup and shutdown costs are high, and few plant operators want to "hire and fire," risking the loss of highly skilled employees.
