Language equips you with something akin to a television remote control device, capable of sending invisible digital signals that reprogram your listener, but that relies on pressure waves rather than on infrared light ([1] p. 257). Sure, other animals can roar, show off, flash, sing, release odours, or bear their teeth, but with language you can be far more precise: “please, would you fetch that stick for me? No, that one over there”, you can make plans, you can refer to the future or the past, you can negotiate, teach and be taught, and you can talk others up, or down.
