We've become used to choosing growing media according to the physical and chemical properties of their ingredients - particle size, air-filled porosity (AFP), bulk density, pH, cation exchange capacity, nutrient content and, of course, absence of damaging contaminants. But physics and chemistry are just two aspects of soil science. The third is biology - and rootzone biology is set to become just as important to the next generation of growing media as physical and chemical characteristics.
