The age-old question of whether politicians can or should influence horticulture raised its head again as the Conservatives dominated the recent local elections. Key local issues include planning for polytunnels, garden centre and nursery developmentand the old chestnut of park budgets. But many consultants would say that local issues really are just that - local. Therefore, it's up to local campaigners to sort out their issues, and failing that, it's for national government to set the agenda, particularly with the polytunnels hot potato.
